Recent US tariffs not intended to target Vietnam

VOV.VN - US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper has affirmed that recent tariff measures were not aimed at Vietnam, adding that the US remains committed to maintaining and ramping up bilateral economic and trade cooperation with the country.

According to the European-American Market Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, during a recent working session between Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien and US Ambassador Marc E. Knapper on boosting bilateral economic, trade, and investment ties, particularly in key sectors such as energy and industry, the ambassador stated that the new US trade policy is designed to promote fair trade while safeguarding economic security, national security, US workers, and businesses.

The recent tariff measures were not targeted at Vietnam, Knapper said, adding that his nation aims to sustain and further develop bilateral economic and trade relations in a positive direction.

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien voiced support for the US stance on fair trade, affirming that Vietnam has no intention of carrying out discriminatory measures, imposing trade restrictions, or taking actions that could harm US industries or workers.

Vietnam welcomes US investors for engagement in new energy projects, power development, oil and gas exploration and processing, the gas industry, and mineral exploitation to ensure energy security and strengthen sustainable supply chains between the two nations.

The minister also urged both sides to continue implementing the commitments outlined in the Comprehensive Energy Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2019.

He underscored the complementary nature of the Vietnamese and US economies, highlighting it as a crucial factor driving the robust, balanced, and sustainable growth of bilateral trade ties.

The minister reaffirmed that Vietnam considers the US a top strategic partner and expressed the country’s desire to deepen economic, trade, and investment cooperation comprehensively and sustainably, fostering mutual understanding and strategic trust.

The nation also regards the US as one of its key long-term and reliable suppliers of energy, machinery, equipment, technology, and raw materials, Dien went on.

Regarding agricultural products, Vietnam is currently the ninth-largest export market for US agricultural products. Both countries need to further ramp up agricultural cooperation to diversify products and supply chains. Vietnam is open to expanding its market and increasing imports of US agricultural products while seeking greater US market access for Vietnamese agricultural goods.

Ambassador Knapper noted that 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomacy. The US hopes to use this milestone as a springboard to elevate bilateral cooperation to new heights, translating commitments under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into tangible progress. He emphasized that economic and trade cooperation will continue to serve as a key pillar driving overall bilateral ties.

Both the US government and private sector stand ready to augment cooperation with Vietnam in emerging and high-potential fields aligned with global development trends, such as energy security, climate security, and food security, as well as high-tech industries.

The US hopes to deepen its involvement in Vietnam’s major projects and urges the Vietnamese Government to expedite legal and regulatory reforms to further facilitate US investment in new sectors, including energy, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and aviation.

Furthermore, the US greatly values Vietnam's efforts in combating origin fraud, preventing illegal transshipment, and avoiding trade remedy circumvention. It looks forward to continued cooperation to protect the interests of businesses in both nations.
