Vietnamese-Korean drama Leaving Mom set for North American release

VOV.VN - Skyline Media, Vietnam's most dynamic sales agent, has partnered with New Jersey-based Eastern Edge Films to release the Vietnamese-Korean family drama "Mang mẹ đi bỏ” (Leaving Mom) in 140 theaters across the United States and Canada, according to Deadline.com.

The release marks a significant step in bringing Vietnamese cinema to international audiences, particularly as Mang mẹ đi bỏ has made a strong cultural impact in Vietnam since its early August debut. Box Office Vietnam reported that the film has earned over VND162 billion, approximately US$6.16 million, at the domestic box office.

The North American premiere is set for August 28, in time for Labor Day Weekend, Deadline.com added.

The film explores the emotional bond between Hoan (played by Tuan Tran), a young street barber, and his mother Hanh (played by Hong Dao), who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. As Hanh’s condition deteriorates, Hoan decides to take her to the Republic of Korea to entrust her to her former family.

Jung plays Jeong Min, Hanh’s kind-hearted Korean husband, representing the most beautiful chapter of her life. The film delves into themes of pain and emotional strain as Hanh becomes a burden on her son.

The Korean cast features Jung Il-woo (High Kick!) and Go Kyung-pyo (Reply 1988), while the Vietnamese cast includes rising actress Juliet Bao Ngoc (Glorious Ashes) and comedians Quoc Khanh, Lam Vy Da, Vinh Rau, and Hai Trieu.

The movie is produced by Sidus And Teu Entertainment, a company founded by local filmmaker Phan Gia Nhat Linh and Korean producer Yuno Choi to create high-quality feature films for the Vietnamese market.

“Jawahar Sharma’s New Jersey-based Eastern Edge Films has licensed North American rights to the film from Skyline Media and will partner on the territory’s theatrical release,” says the website.

This is not the first collaboration between the two companies. They previously co-released Chị Dâu (The Real Sister), the eighth highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time, and Nhà Gia Tiên (The Ancestral Home), which ranks seventh.
