Vietnamese community in Prince Edward Island preserves cultural identity
VOV.VN - The visit by Vietnam’s Ambassador to Prince Edward Island has highlighted the role of overseas communities in preserving national identity and fostering multicultural ties with Canada.

As part of a working visit to Prince Edward Island (PEI), a delegation from the Embassy of Vietnam in Canada, led by Ambassador Pham Vinh Quang, held meetings with representatives of the Lieutenant Governor of Canada in PEI, senior officials from the Department of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population, the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, and members of the Vietnamese community living in the province.
PEI is Canada’s smallest province by area, located on the country’s eastern seaboard and surrounded entirely by the Atlantic Ocean. With a population of around 180,000, the province has a relatively high population density. The Vietnamese community in PEI has only recently begun to take shape, with most members being investors and businesspeople, primarily residing in the capital, Charlottetown.
Speaking to the press, Ambassador Pham Vinh Quang applauded the Vietnamese community in PEI for their solidarity, cultural pride, and proactive efforts to integrate into Canadian society. Despite geographical distance and a modest population size, the community has demonstrated resilience and a strong sense of identity, contributing to PEI’s cultural diversity and social development. Local authorities and residents have also shown goodwill and support, while creating favorable conditions for the community to settle and thrive.
In 2019, the community established the Vietnamese Association in PEI, a non-profit organization aimed at strengthening connections, promoting integration, and preserving cultural traditions. The Association has since organized a range of activities that help maintain cultural ties with the homeland while enriching the province’s multicultural landscape.
In discussions with provincial leaders, Ambassador Vinh proposed continued support for the Vietnamese community with a focus on developing a community center, expanding free vocational and language training programs, and facilitating heritage language education. The talks also explored the potential for increasing immigration from Vietnam and advancing multicultural initiatives.
The visit by the Vietnamese Embassy delegation to PEI helped identify new opportunities for cooperation and reaffirmed the shared commitment to building an inclusive, prosperous, and culturally diverse society in Canada, thereby further reinforcing the enduring friendship between Vietnam and Canada.
