Vietnamese cinema expands international ties at Busan Film Festival 2025

VOV.VN - Vietnamese cinema is making a strong presence at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) with two screenings, one project in the Asian Project Market, and a series of meetings, seminars, and cooperation agreements aimed at boosting regional collaboration.

Two films were selected for screening this year. Quan Ky Nam (Ky Nam Inn) by Leon Le, fresh from its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, is featured in the Asian Cinema Window section. Khe Uoc Ban Dau (Bride of the Covenant) by Le Van Kiet, released in Vietnam on September 12, appears in the Midnight Passion program for mystery and horror films.

The project Bo Sua Bay (Flying Milk Cow), winner of Best Genre Project at the 2025 Da Nang Asian Film Festival, has been chosen among the top 30 entries at the Asian Project Market.

At the Asian Content & Film Market (ACFM), the Vietnamese booth showcases landscapes of Da Nang, Ninh Binh, and Quang Binh to attract filmmakers while promoting the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF), including workshops and a preview of its 2026 edition.

The Vietnam Film Development Association (VFDA) also met with the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) to discuss production cooperation, data sharing, and youth training programs. In addition, a seminar titled “Heartbeat of Vietnamese Cinema-Introduction of Promising Projects” brought together Vietnamese and international filmmakers to exchange views on trends and challenges in co-production.

BIFF Chairman Park Kwang Su praised Vietnam’s talent and potential to develop an independent film industry “faster than anywhere else.” Vietnamese Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Vu Ho highlighted cinema as “a bridge connecting the past, present, and future,” strengthening Vietnam–Korea friendship.

The festival also introduced upcoming co-productions: Ho linh trang si – Bi an mo vua Dinh (The Last Secret of the First Emperor) by Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, and Sai Gon Oppa by Korean director Park Gyu Tae, co-produced by BHD (Vietnam), Film Line (Korea) and WebTVAsia, both set for release in 2026.

BIFF, one of Asia’s premier film festivals, runs from September 17 to 26 this year, featuring 241 films from more than 60 countries and territories.
