Two more Hanoi craft villages join World Craft Cities Network

VOV.VN - Two more traditional craft villages in Hanoi have officially joined the World Craft Cities Network, further strengthening Vietnam’s global profile in traditional handicrafts and creative culture.

The Hanoi People's Committee will hold a ceremony at the ancient Imperial Citadel of Thang Long from May 8-10 to celebrate the recognition of Chuyen My mother-of-pearl inlay and lacquerware village and Son Dong lacquer sculpture village as members of the international network.

The event will also feature exhibitions, live demonstrations and craft-making activities showcasing traditional handicrafts from Hanoi and other provinces across Vietnam.

Visitors will be able to explore a wide range of traditional products, including Chuyen My lacquerware and mother-of-pearl inlay works, Son Dong lacquer sculptures, Bat Trang ceramics and Van Phuc silk, alongside Once Commune One Product (OCOP) items, tea, cuisine and handicrafts from other provinces.

Delegates from the World Crafts Council (WCC-International) will also visit Hanoi’s craft villages, historical sites and cultural heritage locations to exchange experience regarding craft village development, product design, and branding as well as enhancing the value of traditional handicrafts.

The recognition by the World Crafts Council highlights Hanoi’s long-standing reputation as a land of traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage. In 2024, Bat Trang ceramic village and Van Phuc silk village were also admitted to the network. Hanoi now has four recognised craft villages, making Vietnam the country with the second-highest number of villages in the network after Iran.

According to the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment, the city currently has 337 craft villages which serve as cultural resources for Hanoi to develop tourism, ecological agriculture, and sustainable rural economy. The international recognition of these craft villages not only contributes to preserving traditional cultural values but also opens up opportunities for trade promotion, brand development, while enhancing the value of Vietnamese handicrafts in the international market.

Founded in 1964 and headquartered in Kuwait, the World Crafts Council is a non-profit international organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional handicrafts worldwide. Over the past six decades, the organisation has recognised 83 world craft villages across 34 countries.
