Poetry Day highlights national identity

Speaking at the opening, poet Huu Thinh said the government proclaimed Vietnam Poetry Day 14 years ago with the aim of reviving interest in poetry, encouraging poetic activities and supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression.

“Since then, it has become part of the annual spring TET celebration and a vivid expression of our humanity, and its complexity, diversity and creativity,” he noted.

Poets the likes of Anh Ngoc, Tran Dang Khoa, Nguyen Viet Chien and Nguyen Huu Quy along with hundreds of school age children and young lyricists from across the nation also participated in the event.

Poetry has always represented an intimate expression that has enriched the national dialogue and weaved together the Vietnamese culture for thousands of years, they said in their recitals.

Most importantly, it has always epitomized society’s fundamental desire for independence and peace.

On the occasion, an exhibition was opened, introducing the biographies of 40 famous national poets who gained worldwide popularity during the national struggle for independence from the French colonialists.
