Korean romance filmed in Vietnam tops box office, overtakes Avatar 3
VOV.VN - The Republic of Korea (RoK)’s romantic film Once We Were Us, featuring many stunning scenes filmed in Vietnam, has just surpassed the blockbuster Avatar 3 to dominate the Korean box office for the second consecutive week.
According to the latest data from Korean Film Biz Zone (KoBiz) run by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), Once We Were Us remained the top-grossing film over the latest weekend, earning about US$2.1 million from 316,411 admissions. The film has now grossed US$10.4 million in total, with cumulative attendance reaching around 1.5 million since its release.
Directed by Kim Do-young, Once We Were Us is a Korean remake of the 2018 Chinese hit Us and Them. Starring Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young, the film follows two former lovers who reunite years after being separated by the pressures of urban life. Ten years later, an unexpected reunion forces them to confront shared memories and unfulfilled dreams from their youth.
Several key scenes were filmed in Ho Chi Minh City, drawing particular attention from Vietnamese audiences.
Meanwhile, the Hollywood blockbuster Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, slipped to second place but continued to post solid numbers. The film earned an additional US$1.5 million over the weekend, pushing its total box office in the RoK to US$50.4 million, with approximately 6.3 million viewers since its mid-December release.
Despite losing the top spot, Avatar 3 still accounts for about 21% of total box office revenue, underlining the franchise’s sustained appeal even as domestic Korean films gain ground.
More and more Korean filmmakers have chosen Vietnam as a filming location in recent times, showing the growing trend of cultural cooperation, while opening up opportunities to promote the image of Vietnam and its people through high-quality cinematic works to international friends.
