Designer Phan Dang Hoang brings 40 designs to Milano Fashion Week 2027
VOV.VN - Vietnamese designer Phan Dang Hoang has brought a Spring/Summer 2027 collection of over 40 designs titled "Tam Cam" inspired by the iconic Vietnamese fairy tale, to Milano Fashion Week.
This marks the third time Vietnamese designer Phan Dang Hoang has staged a physical runway show at Milano Fashion Week, using each design to convey narratives rooted in Vietnamese values.
Drawing inspiration from a fairy tale deeply etched into the cultural memory of generations of Vietnamese people, the collection explores Tam’s transformative journey, from a gentle girl enduring profound injustice to a figure on a continuous quest for self-rediscovery and personal fulfillment.
Phan Dang Hoang does not retell the original plot nor present the collection as literal fashion illustrations of familiar characters. Instead, he captures the underlying spirit of Tam’s evolution.
In this collection, traditional halter tops (ao yem), crow's-beak kerchiefs (khan mo qua), fluid lines, and the characteristic grace of a culturally rich region are distilled, deconstructed, and restructured into contemporary silhouettes.
Memoric imagery is detached from its traditional form and reinterpreted through Phan Dang Hoang's signature design language, where structure, fabric, and technique converge to give familiar elements a renewed appearance.
The collection of over 40 designs unfolds a deliberate metamorphosis, featuring structures and silhouettes in constant flux. Bold, sharp cut-outs alternate with soft, flowing lines, establishing a rhythm between strength and femininity.
Phan Dang Hoang incorporates hand-embroidery using silk thread, executed by artisans from northern Vietnamese craft villages. These embroidered details transcend mere decoration to form a textural layer of memory, juxtaposing time, patience, and artisanal craftsmanship against the rapid pace of modern fashion.
Integrating traditional hand-embroidery avoids mere nostalgia. Through his treatment, traditional technique merges into a novel visual framework, engaging in a dialogue between past and present. Each stitch bears the artisan's personal imprint while deepening the narrative of culture, memory, and transformation.
From Vietnam to Milan, this journey pursues a two-way dialogue: projecting values shaped by Vietnamese culture onto the global stage while absorbing international fashion movements to refine a distinct design lexicon.
For Phan Dang Hoang, it is also how culture stays alive in the present and evolves into the future: "Not losing one's identity, transforming to be oneself."
