"Cu Li never cries" awarded Best Picture at Asian Film Fest in Rome

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese film Cu Li never cries, directed by Pham Ngoc Lan, has been awarded Best Picture at the 22nd Asian Film Festival (AFF22), held in Rome, Italy, from April 8 to 16.

The award ceremony took place on the evening of April 16 at the prestigious Farnese Cinema in Rome. Nguyen Thu Ha, Counsellor at the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy, attended the event and received the award on behalf of the film crew.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ha expressed her honour in receiving such a meaningful award and extended her gratitude to the organisers and jury for their efforts in promoting Asian cinema, particularly Vietnamese films, to Italian audiences.
She added that the award would be presented to the director and the film crew, who would surely be deeply moved, though it was unfortunate they could not attend the event in person.

The 2025 edition of the festival featured 36 feature-length films across a variety of categories, including debut works, non-competition entries, and official competition selections. Participating countries included the Republic of Korea, Japan, Taiwan (China), the Philippines, China, Hong Kong (China), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

This accolade marks a significant milestone for Vietnamese cinema on the international stage, underscoring its growing recognition and influence. It also opens new opportunities for Vietnamese filmmakers to reach wider global audiences and encourages deeper cultural and artistic exchange between Vietnam and Italy.

Founded by the Robert Bresson Film Foundation in 2003, the Asian Film Festival in Italy showcases outstanding new films from East Asia, highlighting works by both emerging and established directors. It serves as an important platform for networking among filmmakers, producers, and distributors across Italy, Europe, and East Asia.

In recent years, Vietnamese films have garnered increasing attention at the festival. At the 2024 edition, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell by director Pham Thien An also won the Best Picture award.
