“Colours of Lai Chau” highland market brings ethnic culture to Hanoi
VOV.VN - A highland market themed “Colours of Lai Chau” is taking place from April 30 to May 3 at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the cultural life of ethnic communities in Hanoi.
The event opens a series of activities under the theme “Highland Rendezvous”, bringing together more than 100 artisans and community members from 16 ethnic groups living and practising regularly at the village, including Tay, Nung, Dao, Hmong, Muong, Thai, Kho Mu, Ba Na, Gia Rai, Ede and Khmer.
Beyond performances, the programme allows communities to present their daily life, customs and cultural practices directly to the public.
The market space is recreated with around 40 stalls, including 33 featuring local products and six dedicated to the nothern mountanious province of Lai Chau, alongside food and service areas. Visitors can sample highland dishes such as xôi ngũ sắc five-colour sticky rice, bánh dày (glutinous rice cake) and bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls), and take part in traditional food preparation guided by artisans.
Cultural activities take place within the market, with folk dances, songs and traditional instruments creating a lively and familiar atmosphere. Visitors can also join folk games such as spinning tops, throwing pao, stick pushing and rope swinging.
A highlight of the programme is the performance of the Mong khen (a traditional wind instrument). Artisans not only perform but also demonstrate and guide its use, offering insight into its cultural significance. Traditional crafts such as wax printing, weaving and cake making are also presented.
Alongside these activities, a photo exhibition titled “Vibrant colours of the market” introduces landscapes and daily life in highland areas, with a focus on Lai Chau, helping bring these cultural values closer to the public.
The event is an attractive destination during the holiday period, while contributing to the preservation and promotion of traditional cultural values and strengthening exchanges between regions.
