American War stories go on air
A TV series on the American war in South Vietnam began airing on Vietnam Television's VTV1 channel this week, as part of the station's screening to mark the 40th anniversary of the country's Reunification Day, April 30.
The 25-part series, titled Ky Uc Chien Tranh – Nhin Tu Hai Phia (Memories of Wars – Views from Both Sides), was written and directed by Minh Chuyen, a veteran author and documentary filmmaker.
The work covers the war's events and battles, focusing on both Vietnamese and American soldiers. It also highlights the most well-known victories of the Vietnamese and the suffering of soldiers and other citizens during and after the war.
To complete the film, Chuyen and his staff travelled around Vietnam, meeting and interviewing dozens of soldiers, historians and war researchers.
The film staff also met and interviewed American veterans living in Boston and Washington DC.
"My film is about the fate of both Vietnamese and Americans during and after the war who face losses and problems," said Chuyen, who spent two years writing the film's screenplay.
In an interview with local media before the release of the film, Chuyen said he wanted to help younger generations learn more about the world's history.
The film can be seen daily at 7.30am on VTV1.
Another film of Chuyen's on the American War will be aired on VTV4 later this month.
The 10-part series, Huyen Thoai Tau Khong So (Legend of the Ships with No Registration), tell the stories of soldiers who made hundreds of secret trips by sea to carry ammunitions and supplies from the north to battlefields in the south during the war.
The work praises both Vietnam's armed forces and its people and is a shining example of revolutionary heroism, intelligence, courage and iron will.
