Washington-based centre to host annual East Sea conference

An international conference discussing on recent developments in the East Sea and relevant policies will be held by the Southeast Asia Program and Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative under the US Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on July 12.

The annual event will feature international speakers from throughout the region, including those from involved countries, focusing on examining both longstanding and emerging issues in one of the world’s most important maritime routes.

Panels will debate legal and military issues and geostrategic implications for the region.

This year, CSIS will arrange for the first time a panel discussing environmental costs of recent military developments on the ecosystem in the East Sea.

The full-day conference, the sixth of its kind, is expected to see experts and senior officials from the US, the Philippines, Vietnam, Japan, China, Taiwan (China), Australia and Malaysia.

Acting Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam Nguyen Vu Tung will represent Vietnam to attend the event.
