Thailand ramps up for referendum

Thailand has ramped up campaigns to encourage voting in the upcoming referendum on the new draft constitution on August 7.

District officials in Bangkok and provincial and local election officials continued rallies on the referendum on the streets while broadcasting campaigns have been increased.

The country’s Election Commission (EC) has targeted canvassing 80% or 40.4 million of 50.5 million eligible voters.

Bangkok EC chief Somphob Rangapsuk declared that all 50 districts in the capital were ready for the vote and officials would be stationed at all polling stations. 

Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said all ministry officials have been ordered to support the EC and monitor the situation during and after the polling. 

The referendum will run from 8am to 4pm on August 7. According to a survey on 2,810 people in the country, carried out between July 26-29, 87.8% of respondents said they will cast ballots on the day and only 6.2% said they will not attend the vote.
