Singapore, India pledge to deepen bilateral relations

Singapore and India have pledged to deepen their bilateral relations and work together in fields such as smart city and skill training, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said after his meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi. 

Speaking at the joint press conference following a closed meeting between the two leaders, PM Lee expressed his optimism on India’s development under the leadership of PM Modi and said that Singapore is ready to support India’s efforts in transforming its economy and train young Indians necessary skills. 

On his part, PM Modi expressed his hope that the issuance of government bond in rupee in Singapore will help India increase its capital for infrastructure need. 

Modi said the two sides also pledged to cooperate in responding to threats, including cyber security ones. 

The two leaders witnessed the signing of three agreements between the two countries on industrial property rights and skill development. They also agreed to promote a second assessment on the comprehensive economic cooperation agreement between the two countries. 

PM Lee is on a visit to India from October 3-7. Singapore is one of largest foreign investors in India in 2015 while more than 8,000 Indian companies are operating in Singapore.
