The Philippine police said on May 1 that 10 Indonesian sailors held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf insurgent group five weeks ago were freed.
Last March, the Abu Sayyaf group kidnapped the 10 Indonesian sailors and demanded a ransom worth US$1 million for their release. However, the Indonesian Government refused the demand.
According to the Philippine authorities, the Abu Sayyaf group is still detaining 11 foreign hostages.
