Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi urges armed groups to sign ceasefire deal
Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has urged non-signatory armed groups to join the government peace process by signing the nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA).
As leader of the National Reconciliation and Peace Centre, Aung San Suu Kyi called on the groups to work with the civil society to find ways to strengthen the monitoring mechanism, thus ensuring non-violation of the ceasefire agreement and equal participation in the 21st Century Panglong Conference in February 2017.
The call was made after a number of clashes in the northern state of Shan, notably the armed conflict on security posts in Muse and Kutkai towns on November 20 by an alliance of three armed groups- the Kachin Independence Army, the Taang National Liberation Army, and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army. All the three groups have not signed the NCA.
The clashes have killed at least 10 people and injured 33 others.
