Japan, Philippines talk transfer of coast guard ships

Japan and the Philippines have started talks on Tokyo’s transfer of two coast guard ships to Manila, deputy spokesperson of Japan’s foreign minister Masato Ohtaka said on August 12.

The ship transfer is part of the two countries’ agreement on defence equipment.

The two multi-purpose vessels will be in addition to ten mid-sized coast guard ships worth 8.8 billion pesos (US$188.52 million) that Japan plan to hand over to the Philippines from next week.

The ship transfer was discussed in an 80-minute meeting between Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Japanese foreign minister Fumio Kishida in Davao on August 11.

Earlier, Japan also announced a US$2.4 billion investment in a new railway in the Philippines to reduce traffic jam in Manila. The 38km railway line will connect Manila with Bulacan province. The investment is expected to be disbursed over a period of 40 years.
