Indonesia declares to run for UN Security Council non-permanent seat

Indonesia has announced the country will run for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2019-2020.

In a speech on September 23 at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the UN should reform to become stronger and more suitable with challenges and the situation in the 21 st century.

He also stressed that the UN should become a transparent, effective, responsible, capable organisation and it should also play a central role of the world power.

The Vice President confirmed that Indonesia will consistently implement commitments to strengthening the peacekeeping force to 2019 and other efforts to combat terrorism on both regional and global scales.

The election for the UNSC non-permanent members will be carried out in mid-2019. Other candidates of the Asia-Pacific region are India and Vietnam .

Indonesia was first elected to the UNSC for the 1974-1975 tenure, for the second time in 1995-1996 and for a third time in 2007-2008.
