Cabinet approves New Year traditional celebrations

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to organize a traditional-Buddhist New Year celebration nationwide while Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha urged every sector to help lower road fatalities this year.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut expressed his concerns about road safety and encouraged relevant agencies to do their best to lower the accidents. He also said regarding the arrival of 2017 that he hoped the situation in the country will be peaceful and full of happiness next year. 

According to Assistant Spokesperson to the Prime Minister’s Office Col Taksada Sangkhachan, the Cabinet gave a green light to a proposal to kick off the New Year in a traditional way. 

On New Year’s Eve, a bell will be sounded by monks nine times at temples across the country. This will be followed by a prayer ceremony and a candle procession. 

An alms giving ceremony will be held the following morning. In addition, the Cabinet has instructed 15 border provinces to organize the prayer ceremony for ASEAN countries and 504 Thai temples overseas to join the bandwagon.
