ASEAN, UN make great effort to tackle global security challenges

(VOV) - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on August 18 held an open debate on the subject of regional organizations and contemporary global security challenges in New York with representatives from nearly 50 countries and international organisations to take part in.

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, head of the Vietnam Mission to the UN, said on behalf of ASEAN, that the international community is facing numerous challenges in safeguarding peace and security as traditional and non-traditional security issues are getting more complicated.

She emphasised that to obtain long-term solutions in a joint effort to ensure international security, due attention should be paid to the role of regional organisations.

ASEAN has recently joined efforts with the UN to strengthen regional peace and security, contributing to the establishment of an ASEAN Community in 2015, Nga said

ASEAN has also closely cooperated with its partners to build mechanisms including the effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) to prevent conflicts and resolve regional disputes in a peaceful manner.

In addition, ASEAN has attached much importance to fostering cooperation with the UN, such as joining the UN peacekeeping mission, concretising the ASEAN-UN Comprehensive Partnership and promoting cooperation between the two Secretariats.

Ambassador Nga shared with other participants experience in developing the ASEAN Community, adding that to better handle new challenges, the international community should attach much importance to gaining a consensus, listening to opinions of relevant sides, respecting basic principles of international law, particularly observing national sovereignty and territorial integrity and resolving disputes peacefully.
