Vietnam passport climbs two notches in Henley global rankings
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s passport has risen two places to 90th globally in the latest Henley Passport Index 2025 (HPI), reflecting a modest improvement in international mobility, according to the HPI’s December update.
The ranking marks an improvement from 92nd place in the October update, though it remains below the country’s position of 87th recorded in 2024. In October, Vietnam’s passport had dropped eight places quarter on quarter.
Vietnamese passport holders can now access 50 destinations without a visa or with simplified entry requirements such as e-visas, visas on arrival or electronic travel authorisations, out of a total of 199 countries and territories.
In terms of visa openness, Vietnam ranked 80th globally, granting visa-free access to nearly 40 destinations, down slightly from 51 destinations in the third quarter.
Most visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations for Vietnamese citizens are within Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar and Malaysia, as well as island nations such as the Maldives, Cape Verde, Comoros and the Cook Islands.
Vietnam’s highest-ever ranking in the 20-year history of the Henley Passport Index was 78th, achieved in 2006 and 2007.
Globally, the top of the ranking remained largely unchanged. Singapore retained its position as the world’s most powerful passport, offering visa-free access to 193 destinations, while ranking 15th for visa openness.
Malaysia entered the top 10 after climbing two places, with its citizens able to travel visa-free to 181 destinations, making Asia-Pacific home to seven of the world’s top 10 passports.
The United States was just outside the top 10, ranking 11th, while placing 77th in visa openness.
The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and analysis by Henley & Partners, covering 199 passports and 227 destinations, with monthly updates.
