Vietnam named cheapest country for expats for fifth straight year

VOV.VN - Vietnam has been ranked the most affordable country in the world for expatriates and long-stay travelers for the fifth consecutive year, according to French digital news outlet Journal du Net, citing the annual cost-of-living data from global expat network InterNations.

The latest InterNations survey highlights that Vietnam continues to top the global list of lowest cost-of-living destinations for foreign residents in 2026, a position it has held since 2022. The findings show that 89% of expatriates living in Vietnam say they are satisfied with the overall cost of living, while 87% report that their income allows them to live “very comfortably.”

According to the report, the relatively low value of the Vietnamese dong (VND) compared with major foreign currencies such as the euro and US dollar boosts purchasing power for expatriates and international visitors alike, contributing to Vietnam’s appeal as an affordable destination.

Everyday expenses in Vietnam remain notably low by international standards. Petrol is priced at around EUR0.7 per liter, and a typical local meal in cities such as Hanoi often costs less than EUR1 to EUR3, a level of affordability that is rare among other popular travel and expat destinations.

Accommodation costs are also considered budget-friendly. Dormitory beds in guesthouses start at about EUR5 per night, while traditional hotels and mid-range guesthouses generally range between EUR8 - 20 per night, making Vietnam accessible to a wide range of visitors, from backpackers to families.

Transportation remains inexpensive, with monthly public transport passes costing roughly EUR7 and taxi fares averaging under EUR0.5 per kilometer. Sightseeing and tourism experiences are also competitively priced, with a two-day cruise in Ha Long Bay costing about EUR100 and a guided homestay-based trekking tour in Sa Pa around EUR60.

The country’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes and vibrant street food scene further enhance its attractiveness to long-term visitors and expats looking for both cultural immersion and economical living. Signature Vietnamese dishes such as phở (noodle soup), bánh mì (baguette) and bún chả (dish of grilled pork served with rice vermicelli, fresh herbs and dipping sauce) have become emblematic of this value proposition.

As global financial pressures continue to influence migration patterns, Vietnam’s consistent ranking reinforces its status as a top choice for foreign residents seeking a high quality of life without high costs.
