Flights between Vietnam to destinations such as the Republic of Korea and Shanghai will be the first routes that will be equipped with the inflight wifi service.
The airline is to utilise technology provided by its partner Sitaonair, which will transmit signals from the aircraft to the Internet via satellite. This is a similar service used on several flights of regional airlines including Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways.
The new service will allow passengers to perform simple tasks such as browsing the internet, sending and receiving emails, and using messaging applications. According to the airline's representative, the internet speed of this service will be limited and will not be as fast as the wifi on the ground.
In order to use this service, customers will have to pay an access fee via credit card during the flight. Vietnam Airline representatives said that the carrier will not offer a specific price for using the service, but have estimated that costs will range between US$8 and US$10 per passenger per flight.
