Tourism sector records 3.5 million visitors during 2026 New Year holiday

VOV.VN - The tourism sector served an estimated 3.5 million visitors during the four-day 2026 New Year holiday from January 1 to 4, pointing to a solid start to the year.

Average occupancy at accommodation facilities nationwide reached about 51%, with higher rates of around 65% recorded in several key destinations, including Phu Quoc, Da Lat, Mang Den, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Vung Tau and Mui Ne.

Inbound tourism continued to grow as the New Year holiday coincided with a peak travel period, with international arrivals mainly coming from China, the Republic of Korea, the United States, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

The 2026 New Year tour market saw greater diversity in destinations and products, alongside clearer improvements in service quality. Many localities and travel companies introduced new offerings or refreshed existing products.

Travel trends during the period showed a preference for short trips, with visitors focusing on relaxation, choosing easily accessible destinations and placing greater emphasis on personal experiences, cuisine and exploring new spaces. Domestic tourism remained the mainstay, while international travel became more selective, prioritizing nearby markets that fit shorter timeframes. Travelers were also willing to spend more on personalized itineraries rather than mass-market tours.

Notably, travel combined with year-end events continued to gain traction, with small business groups and circles of friends using the holiday to organize year-end parties alongside leisure trips, particularly at resorts near major cities.

The New Year holiday is seen as an important lead-in to the peak tourism season early in 2026. Localities have focused on attracting visitors, improving service quality and building a friendly and safe destination image to encourage repeat visits during longer holidays.

Overall results from the 2026 New Year holiday reflect coordinated management efforts, proactive preparation by localities and businesses, and the positive impact of cultural and entertainment events welcoming the new year. Continued growth in international arrivals also underscores the effectiveness of new visa policies and tourism promotion activities.

These developments provide encouraging signals for the tourism sector’s 2026 targets of welcoming 25 million international visitors, serving 150 million domestic tourists, and generating total tourism revenue of about VND 1.125 trillion.
