Three Vietnamese dishes among top 86 best salads in Asia

VOV.VN - Three Vietnamese dishes, including Gỏi bò (Vietnamese Beef Salad), Nộm (traditional Vietnamese salad), and Phở trộn (Mixed Pho), have been named among the list of the top 86 best rated salads in Asia, as compiled by international food website Taste Atlas.

According to Taste Atlas, Gỏi bò ranked 13th in the list. The dish is made with beef, lime juice, fish sauce, chili sauce, chili peppers, kaffir lime leaves, cilantro, mint, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and watercress.

The beef used for the salad should be top or bottom round, which is sliced, marinated, and then grilled before it's finally mixed with the other ingredients.

“The salad is dressed with a combination of lime juice, fish sauce, chili sauce, and sugar. Gỏi bò is traditionally served immediately while the beef is still hot,” the website revealed.

Meanwhile, Nộm was placed in 20th position. The local delicacy is made with a combination of fresh and grated vegetables such as cabbage and turnip, along with papaya, green mango, banana flowers, cucumber slices, and sometimes even shredded boiled pork.

Other common ingredients include hot chili peppers, roasted ground nuts, and grated carrots which makes the salad even more visually attractive and colourful.

“The salads are usually dressed with nước chấm, and they're often served with prawn crackers on the side,” it added.

Phở trộn, which is positioned in at 21st, is a classic Vietnamese pho variety. This type of pho is dry, meaning that it doesn't contain broth but is instead a salad with meat (beef or chicken) and noodles. The dish is typical of Hanoi and it's especially popular during the summer.

According to Taste Atlas, the sliced meat is marinated in salt, ginger, pepper, garlic, lime juice, and five spice powder. It's then browned in a pan and mixed with fresh greens such as mint, Thai basil, lettuce, cilantro, and bean sprouts; as well as other ingredients such as fried shallots and rice noodles; before a dressing consisting of vinegar, fish sauce, sugar, and tamarind paste.

“The noodle salad is often garnished with chopped peanuts and red chili peppers, while lime wedges are usually served on the side,” the website concluded.

Taste Atlas, founded in 2015 and headquartered in Zagreb in Croatia, is known for its global map of traditional dishes. The rankings on Taste Atlas are based on opinions and reviews offered by culinary experts and critics, ensuring the reliability of the awards.
