The ranking focuses on lesser-known locations that have retained their natural landscapes, local character and distinctive travel experiences, offering quieter alternatives to mass tourism.

Phu Quy Island was the only destination from Vietnam to make the list. Khaosod described the island as “cinematic in beauty,” recommending it as an ideal retreat for travelers seeking tranquility amid nature rather than crowded tourist hubs.

It shared that while most travelers flock to Phu Quoc, true island hunters are hopping on the ferry from Phan Thiet to Phu Quy — a rugged volcanic outpost framed by emerald waters and untouched by mass tourism.

“It feels like Vietnam’s coast did 30 years ago”, the Thai media noted.

The island is home to approximately 30,000 people. That's why it remains quite untouched by commercial tourism.

The place lures visitors for its pristine beauty, and panoramic landscapes, particularly the stunning views of the sunrise that guests to the island are able to enjoy. In addition, it has good accommodations such as some affordable small guesthouses and homestays, abundant seafood and friendly locals.

Rounding the list of top 10 ASEAN destinations for 2026 were Ulu Temburong, of Brunei, Nong Khiaw of Laos, Romblon of the Philippines, Doi Mae Salong of Thailand, Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) of Cambodia, Bukit Lawang of Indonesia, Sumba Island of Indonesia, Ipoh of Malaysia, and Mergui Archipelago, Myanmar.

Phu Quy island targets green tourism

The central province of Binh Thuan will implement some major projects in service of tourism development on Phu Quy by 2030, towards turning the island into a destination of green tourism.
