Phu Quoc island sees 27.3% decline in international visitors

VOV.VN - Despite Phu Quoc island representing one of the country's traditional tourism hotspots, it has seen foreign visitor numbers plummet by 27.3% in April to 47,725.

According to Nguyen Minh Dong, director of Phu Quoc International Airport, from April 28 to May 3 the airport is scheduled to only welcome 48 flights with 6,480 passengers.

He noted that currently, the number of international tourists to the island has recorded a slight decline, while flights to Phu Quoc are only from the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Furthermore, flights from India and charter flights with separate departure schedules from Taiwan (China) to the island are temporarily suspended due to a shortage of passengers.

According to a representative of the Kien Giang Provincial Tourism Department, the decline in number of international tourists to Phu Quoc is due to the complicated and unpredictable world economic situation, high inflation, armed conflict, natural disasters, epidemics, and climate change.

All of these factors have increased risks to the financial and monetary markets and global food security that heavily impacted the travel demand of international tourists.

Phu Quoc is renowned for being a ‘pearl island' that is endowed with clear blue water beaches such as Bai Sao and Bai Dai. The area features plenty of local specialties including seafood, pepper, and pearls, among others.

It also has well-known destinations, including the busy Duong Dong town, Ham Ninh and Ganh Dau fishing villages, along with other attractive tourist points.

Last year the island was selected as one of 25 best islands in the world by readers of magazine Travel Leisure of the United States.

The nation’s biggest island was also voted by readers of Condé Nast Traveler at the sixth place in the top 10 resort islands in Asia for 2022.
