Mekong Delta in floating season

VOV.VN - A visit to the Mekong Delta when the floating season begins in August gives visitors the chance to experience unique tours that you cannot find anywhere else on the planet.

Floating markets: The western region of Vietnam is known as ‘the land of rivers’ and the lives of the local people are closely linked with boats and the waterway market culture. Visitors can discover numerous floating markets, including Cai Rang in Can Tho, Cai Be in Tien Giang province, Nga Nam in Soc Trang, Nga Bay in Hau Giang, and Long Xuyen in An Giang.
Cay Beo (a tall pole on the front of the boat) is the most unique image of the floating market. The sellers hang examples of their products on the pole so buyers can clearly see what each boat sells.
There are many types of fruit, specialities, and other farm produce on offer.
Travelling to the western region, visitors should not miss out on a visit to the bird sanctuaries, only accessible by canoe.
Covering nearly 850 hectares, Tra Su, about 30 kilometres from Chau Doc Town, is the most unique natural habitat conservation area of the wetland ecosystem in the Mekong Delta.
In the floating season, tourists can experience taking a boat into the forest to admire the beautiful scenery, and listen to the natural symphony of bird song.
U Minh Thuong National Park in Kien Giang province is widely considered the richest region of the Mekong delta in terms of plant and animal biodiversity.  It is home to 243 plant species, 32 species of mammals, 186 species of birds, 50 species of reptiles, 60 species of fish and 203 species of insects.
With its prominent biodiversity of a special wetland, the park was recognised as the 2,228th Ramsar site in the world.
Picking fruit in the garden: Traveling to the region, Vietnam’s largest fruit growing area, visitors are advised to buy an entrance ticket at an attractive price to get into an orchard, where you can wander around the vast garden to pick and taste fresh fruit right from the branch.
Some famous gardens are Cai Be in Tien Giang, Cai Mon in Ben Tre, Lai Thieu in Binh Duong, and Vinh Kim in Tien Giang.
A visit to the floating villages in the western region is a truly  fascinating excursion.
Visitors will find a deeper insight into the lives of local people and admire the simple village architecture on a gentle boat ride.

Holiday goers also have chance to enjoy numerous specialities of the region and listen to “Don Ca Tai Tu”, the musical art that UNESCO recognised as an intangible cultural heritage in 2013.

Visitors can also get some hands-on experience of local life by engaging in several activities, such as wading in the muddy waters to catch fish like a real local farmer or making delicious coconut candy.
