Ho Chi Minh City ranks second globally for resident retention, ahead of Singapore

VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City has overtaken Singapore to claim second place among 65 cities worldwide with the highest “staying power,” according to the City Pulse 2025 report released by the Gensler Research Institute.

The ranking is based on the proportion of residents who say they are “unlikely” or “very unlikely” to move elsewhere.

The report found that 61% of respondents in the southern metropolis expressed a strong intention to stay. Taipei (China) led the list with 64%, while Singapore followed in third place at 59%, ahead of Sydney (58%) and Berlin (51%).

In addition, 83% of Ho Chi Minh City residents said they were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with life in the city, placing it among the top globally in terms of resident satisfaction.

The study attributes this high level of retention to “place attachment,” or the emotional bond people form with their surroundings. While job opportunities, safety, healthcare, and affordability often attract newcomers, the decision to stay long-term tends to be driven by less tangible factors such as pride, community, and a sense of belonging. According to the report, Ho Chi Minh City demonstrates exceptional strength in fostering these emotional connections.

City Pulse 2025 was conducted by the Gensler Research Institute, the research arm of the world’s largest architecture and design firm. The survey gathered responses from 33,000 people across 29 countries, focusing on what influences individuals to stay in or leave the cities they call home.
