Chiang Mai to be promoted as one of the most livable cities in the world

The Ministry of Culture is preparing to make Chiang Mai province in the North better known as one of the world’s most livable cities, along with developing the province as a World Heritage Site.

In his inspection of Chiang Mai to follow up on the performance of the Northern Culture Council, Culture Minister Vira Rojpojchanarat said that the Government focuses on the use of cultural heritage in each part of the country to promote tourism and help generate incomes for local communities.

As for Chiang Mai, he said, it is recognized as the "capital of northern Thailand” and a "city of art and culture.” Mr. Vira stressed the need to preserve the cultural heritage of Chiang Mai. An action plan will be worked out to encourage the people’s sector to join hands in promoting Chiang Mai as one of the most livable cities in the world.

Moreover, cultural activities and shows will take place in Chiang Mai throughout the year in order to upgrade the province into a center of international performances and a venue for cultural exchange with neighboring countries.

Meanwhile, Chiang Mai culture networks held discussions and exchanged views on cultural development at the Chiang Mai Forum 2018. In this forum, information was collected to prepare for mobilizing efforts to promote Chiang Mai as a World Heritage Site.

In October 2017, Chiang Mai was declared a UNESCO Creative City for Crafts and Folk Arts. It is well-known for a diversity of cultural and natural attractions, ethnic cultures, and unique Lanna-style traditions in celebrating many Thai festivals. Numerous handicrafts and agricultural products have made a name for Chiang Mai, as well.

The province has also been developed into a "MICE City” to host meetings, incentive travel, conventions, and exhibitions at an international standard. Blessed with a wonderful climate, rich local cultural and natural heritage, and numerous royally initiated projects, Chiang Mai is also one of Thailand’s must-visit destinations.

In recent years, the city has undergone considerable economic development but still preserves its cultural heritage. The second-largest city in Thailand, after Bangkok, Chiang Mai is also well-known for health and wellness traditions.
