Central Mosque in Pattani Recognized as Thailand’s Taj Mahal
His Majesty King Rama X visited the southern border of Pattani recently to present awards on the occasion of the Koran Recital Competition at the Pattani Central Mosque.
The central mosque is a two-story building and has a large dome, surrounded by four smaller ones in the four directions. There are two minarets on both sides of the building. A large pond is found in front of the mosque. Inside the mosque, there is a large prayer hall and long corridors.
Construction of the Pattani Central Mosque began in 1954. It took nine years for the construction of this magnificent mosque, which was completed in 1963.
On the occasion of the golden jubilee celebrations of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne, the renovation of this mosque was included in the projects for the celebrations of this special occasion.
The Pattani Central Mosque is open for five Muslim daily prayer times. On Fridays and Saturdays, there are religious talks, with about 3,000 participants each time.
This beautiful mosque has become a major tourist attraction and a symbol of Pattani, where more than 80 percent of the local residents are Muslim.
