Vietnam committed to WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement

VOV.VN - The General Department of Vietnam Customs held a press conference on January 29 in Hanoi to discuss key issues pertaining to implementing the World Trade Organisation (WTO)’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA).

Addressing the event, Nguyen Toan, head of the International Cooperation Department said the TFA sets out clear and synchronised trade facilitation standards in accordance with international norms.

Therefore, the TFA should facilitate the implementation of commitments within Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) for which Vietnam is a member.

Toan said the TFA has two sections with 24 provisions.

Section I contains provisions for expediting the movement, release and clearance of goods. It clarifies and improves the relevant articles (V, VIII and X) of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994.

Section II contains special and differential treatment provisions for developing and the least-developed countries aimed at helping them better implement the complicated provisions of the agreement.

The General Department of Vietnam Customs said it plans to supervise the FTA’s commitments which have not been stipulated to in the existing legal documents and propose necessary amendments in the time ahead.

The TFA was approved by WTO members at the Bali Ministerial Conference in December 2013.
