Former Vinashinlines official prosecuted

The Investigation Police Agency under the Ministry of Public Security on November 3 launched criminal proceeding against and arrested Tran Van Khuong, former chief accountant of the Vinashin Ocean Shipping Company (Vinashinlines).

Khuong, born in 1950 in Hanoi, is accused of misappropriating public property in an embezzlement scandal in Vinashinlines, a subsidiary company of the Vietnam Shipping Industry Group (Vinashin).

The same day, the People’s Supreme Procuracy ratified the Investigation Police Agency’s decision to arrest and start criminal proceedings against the Vinashinlines former leader.

The Vinashin scandal is one of the largest cases of embezzlement that have come to light in Vietnam so far, with the established state losses being more than VND910.2 billion (US$40.4 million).

In the scandal, several top leaders of Vinashin and Vinashinlines, were arrested.

Phan Thanh Binh, former chairman and general director of Vinashin and former director of Vinashinlines Tran Van Liem were sentenced to 20 and 19 years in prison respectively in a trial began in March 2012 in Hai Phong. Seven other defendants in the case received sentences from three to 18 years in prison.
