Vietnam’s largest private corporation Vingroup has summited a proposal to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for a metro line connecting the city downtown and the outlying Can Gio district.

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese government on January 16 approved the investment policy for the Can Gio International Transshipment Port project to boost the country’s logistics capabilities and enhance international trade.

Ho Chi Minh City is set to develop a 49-km metro line connecting the downtown area to Can Gio district to synchronise its urban railway network and improve public transportation.

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has approved the planning for the Can Gio coastal urban area, which covers an area of 2,870 hectares and is projected to attract nearly US$9 billion in private investment.

Vietnam's seaport cargo throughput is set to reach 1.2-1.4 billion tonnes by 2030, with container cargo expected to range from 46.3 to 54.34 million TEUs, according to a detailed plan for the development of seaport groups, wharfs, jetties, buoy berths, and water areas in 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

Can Gio mangrove forest, designated by UNESCO in 2000 as the first Mangrove Biosphere Reserve in Vietnam, has been serving as a “green lung” of Ho Chi Minh City.

The Party Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has issued a resolution on development orientations for Can Gio by 2030 that aims to turn this coastal district into a high-quality resort and ecotourism city comparable with regional rivals.

Both the Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) and the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container shipping firm, have shown their resolve to soon start an international transit terminal project in Can Gio district of Ho Chi Minh City.
