Young weightlifter Nguyen Thanh Duy breaks two world records
VOV.VN - Vietnamese weightlifter Nguyen Thanh Duy set two youth world records in the men’s 65kg category at the IWF World Championships Ningbo 2026, China, underlining his potential on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The 17-year-old lifted 130kg in the snatch and 166kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 296kg on October 28, according to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). His clean-and-jerk and total lifts surpassed the previous youth world standards of 158kg and 285kg, respectively.
Duy’s performance was particularly notable given his age and the level of competition at the world championships, which bring together leading weightlifters from around the globe. The event in Ningbo is also the first qualifying competition in the weightlifting pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The Vietnamese teenager has made rapid progress over the past year. At the 2025 Asian Youth Games in Bahrain, he won the men’s 65kg title with a total of 276kg, the first gold medal for the Vietnamese delegation at the Games. He has since added 20kg to that total, according to the IWF.
In August 2026, Duy continued his successful run at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Uzbekistan. He secured gold in the clean and jerk with a lift of 153kg, silver in the total (278kg), and bronze in the snatch (125kg).
In comparison to the Asian championship held over two months ago, Duy has improved his performance by 5kg in the snatch, 7kg in the clean and jerk, and 12kg in the total. The figures reflect significant technical progress for the young Vietnamese weightlifter.
The World Championships Ningbo 2026 organised by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) is taking place from October 27 to November 8, attracting 528 athletes from nearly 100 countries and territories worldwide. The tournament serves as a crucial milestone in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as the results will contribute to the accumulation of ranking points and the qualification process for the Games.
