K'Duong finishes fourth at the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships
VOV.VN - Vietnamese weightlifter K'Duong has secured fourth place in the men's 60kg category at the IWF World Championships Ningbo 2026 held in China, recording a total of 281kg, 9kg short of the medal positions.
K'Duong on October 27 competed in Group A of the men's 60kg category, becoming the first Vietnamese weightlifter to take the platform at this year's championships. The group featured the leading performers in the category.
In the snatch, K'Duong successfully lifted 125kg on his opening attempt but failed to clear 130kg in either of his next two attempts. He finished the first discipline in sixth place, as lifters from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and China gained an early advantage with successful lifts of 130kg and 136kg, respectively.
The Vietnamese weightlifter opened the clean and jerk with a successful 156kg lift before raising his second-attempt target to 163kg. Although he managed to get the bar overhead, he could not complete the lift by fully straightening his body and stabilising the weight as required by the rules.
He appeared to experience a problem with his right thigh after the attempt and struggled to leave the platform. Despite this, he returned for his final attempt and again managed to lift the bar overhead. However, pain in his left thigh caused him to lose balance as he straightened up, forcing him to drop the weight.
K'Duong therefore finished with a total of 281kg to take fourth place overall. China's Yang Yang topped the standings with 304kg, while two DPRK lifters recorded 300kg each to finish behind him.
Several Vietnamese lifters are still due to compete at the championships, including Thanh Duy, Hoai Huong, Quang Thi Tam and Tran Minh Tri. Minh Tri is among those attracting attention after winning bronze in the men's 65kg category at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.
The World Championships Ningbo 2026 organised by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) is taking place from October 27 to November 8, attracting 528 athletes from nearly 100 countries and territories worldwide. The tournament serves as a crucial milestone in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as the results will contribute to the accumulation of ranking points and the qualification process for the Games.
