Vietnam’s top xiangqi player to compete with 15 masters at Wu Yang Cup 2026
VOV.VN - The The 32nd Wuyang Cup National Xiangqi Championship has confirmed 15 players advancing from the qualifying rounds to join Vietnam’s top-ranked player Lai Ly Huynh in the open finals.
The qualifiers were held from January 29 to 31 in Guangzhou, featuring 108 of China’s leading players. Established in 1981, the tournament is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious events in Chinese xiangqi.
A key highlight of this year’s championship is the direct entry of Lai Ly Huynh into the open finals, marking the first time an overseas player has been granted automatic qualification. The invitation followed his world championship victory in September 2025, when he defeated Yin Sheng.
The 16-player open finals will feature a number of prominent Chinese players, including Wang Yubo, Meng Fanrui, Liu Zijian, Wu Wei and Chen Hongsheng, along with two female players, Tang Dan and Tang Sinan.
The open finals of the Wuyang Cup 2026 are scheduled to take place from February 25 to March 1, 2026, in Guangzhou. The event will also include a veterans’ section featuring six renowned xiangqi masters: Lu Qin, Liu Dahua, Xu Tianhong, Yu Youhua, Tao Hanming and Li Laiqun.
