Vietnamese rowers fail in Tokyo, but at their best at Olympics
VOV.VN - Vietnamese duo Luong Thi Thao and Dinh Thi Hao finished third in the lightweight women's pair double sculls in Group C and 15th overall at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on July 29, the best result for Vietnamese rowing at three recent Olympics.
In Group C, the duo came third, clocking 7:19.05 after 2,000 metres, trailing behind duos from Argentina with 7:05.82 and those from Austria with 7:15.25.
The Vietnamese pair clinched a Top 15 finish in the lightweight women's pair double sculls repechage, marking the best-ever achievement of Vietnamese rowing in the category.
Previously at the London 2020 Olympics, duo Pham Thi Hai and Pham Thi Thao ranked fifth in Group C and were among the 16 finalists.
At the Rio 2018 Olympics, duo Ho Thi Ly and Ta Thanh Huyen came in the top 18.
Elsewhere, July 28 saw Vietnamese archer Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu lose 7-1 to Tang Chih-chun of Chinese Taipei in the men’s archery category, failing to progress to the next round.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to last until August 8. Vietnam has sent 18 athletes to the games, but all of its hopefuls have failed to win a medal.
The same day, Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien finished last in the women’s 800m freestyle, ending her journey at the event.
Competing in the first group with six other athletes, Vien took 9 minutes 3.56 seconds to reach the finish line, 31.05 seconds behind Eve Thomas of New Zealand, who came first.
