Vietnamese prodigy wins silver at World Cadet Chess Championship 2025

VOV.VN - Vietnamese chess prodigy Le Phan Hoang Quan has secured a silver medal at the World Cadet Chess Championship 2025, held in Kazakhstan from September 19–30.

Hoang Quan, competing in the U10 category, was the only Vietnamese player to reach the podium. He delivered an impressive performance across 11 rounds played under the Swiss system, winning eight games, drawing two, and losing just one with nine points, equal to China’s Yuan Shunzhe. However, due to a lower tiebreak score, Hoang Quan was awarded the silver.

In a notable final-round match, Hoang Quan lost his queen but still managed to defeat Serbian player Ivanovic Leonid, showcasing both resilience and tactical brilliance.

Prior to the world championship, Hoang Quan won the national youth title in the U11 category, underscoring his rising potential in Vietnamese chess.

The Vietnamese delegation brought six players to the competition including Vu Thanh An (U8), Le Phan Hoang Quan and Nguyen Nhat Khuong (U10), Nguyen Quang Anh, Trinh Nguyen Lam (U12 boys), and Tran Duong Hoang Ngan (U12 girls). Despite strong efforts, none of the other players reached the medal rounds.

The 2025 World Cadet Chess Championship took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from September 19–30, attracting more than 850 young chess players from 88 countries worldwide to compete in the U8, U10, and U12 age categories.
