Vietnamese players to vie for medals at Chess Olympiad 2024

VOV.VN - A strong 10-member Vietnamese team have arrived in Budapest, Hungary, to compete in the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024 which is scheduled to take place from September 10 to 23.

GM Le Quang Liem (world No. 14) will lead the men’s team consisting of Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Le Tuan Minh, Tran Tuan Minh, and Banh Gia Huy in the open category.

Trio Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, and Tran Tuan Minh are expected to improve Vietnam’s ranking at this year’s tournament. In the 2018 Chess Olympiad, Vietnam finished seventh in the medal tally.

Meanwhile, Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Vo Thi Kim Phung, Le Thanh Tu, Luong Phuong Hanh, and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong will represent the country in the women's category. The return of talent Thao Nguyen is expected to build on Vietnamese players’ confidence this year.

Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess tournament that is open to players of all countries worldwide. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, online Chess Olympiad was held in 2021.

This year the tournament will be held in Hungary, featuring the participation of 190 teams in the men’s event and 180 teams in the women’s event.

Players will compete in the Swiss-system tournament's 11 matches until September 23.
