Vietnamese martial artist clinches gold at Asian karate tournament

VOV.VN - Hoang Thi My Tam enjoyed a successful 2022 Asian Karate Championships by winning one gold and two silver medals as the event concluded on December 21 in Tashkent in Kazakhstan.

Tam, 19, grabbed a gold medal in the U21 Kumite Female U55kg category by overcoming Mansour Leen of Jordan.

However, in the Senior Kumite Female U55kg pool, the Vietnamese martial artist suffered a defeat at the hands of Nakamura Shiori of Japan in the final, picking up a silver medal in the process.

Following this Tam fought alongside Nguyen Thi Ngoan and Dinh Thi in the senior Kumite female team final where they were ultimately beaten by athletes from Kazakhstan. With this result, the Vietnamese team brought home a silver medal in the category.

This year the 2022 Asian Karate Championships attracted the participation of nearly 900 competitors and coaches from 28 countries and territories globally.

Tam has been tipped as a rising local star after she won three gold medals for the country at the 2021 Asian Karate Championship, one gold at the Asian Junior Karate Championship in 2019, and one gold at the Southeast Asian Karate Championship in both 2018 and 2019.
