Vietnamese doctor sets milestone with Everest Triple Crown in record four-day climb
VOV.VN - Vietnamese doctor Ngo Hai Son became the first Vietnamese climber to complete the Everest Triple Crown challenge on May 24 after summiting Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse within four days during a single season.
The achievement marks a major milestone for Vietnamese mountaineering and endurance sports.
According to VietSummit, a Vietnamese mountaineering organisation, Ngo Hai Son completed all three peaks of the Everest Massif, including Nuptse, the lowest of the three at 7,855 metres, between May 20 and 24 without returning for an extended rest period.
The feat made him the first Vietnamese climber to reach the summit of Nuptse, the first Vietnamese to summit both Mount Everest and Lhotse within 27 hours, and the first to complete Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse in four days.
Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse form part of the Everest Massif in the Himalayas. Climbers who complete all three peaks in a continuous horseshoe-shaped route are considered to have completed the “Triple Crown”, a challenge carried out from a single departure point at base camp.
Among professional climbers, the Everest Triple Crown is regarded as one of the world’s most demanding mountaineering challenges. The route requires exceptional endurance and the ability to adapt to extreme altitude, while forcing climbers to operate continuously in the “Death Zone” -areas above roughly 8,000 metres where oxygen levels are critically low.
Completing Everest and Lhotse within 24 to 48 hours is already considered a rare feat in mountaineering. Nuptse, however, is seen as the most technically difficult section of the challenge despite being lower in elevation.
With steep sections combining rock and ice climbing, Nuptse is considered one of the most technically demanding mountains in the Himalayas. According to VietSummit, only a few dozen climbers worldwide have completed the Triple Crown route.
Ngo Hai Son has trained in various sports for more than 20 years. He was also the first Vietnamese climber to summit Ama Dablam, a 6,814-metre peak in Nepal known for its steep terrain and technical difficulty.
He has also successfully climbed K2 in Pakistan, the world’s second-highest mountain at 8,611 metres and one of the harshest snow-climbing routes in the world.
