A Vietnamese delegation made up of 27 prominent cueists arrived in the Republic of Korea (RoK) on September 5 to take part in the 2015 Guri Three-Cushion World Cup, scheduled between September 7 and 13.
The annual competition will gather the participation of nearly 150 players from Sweden, Holland, Belgium, France, Italy, Vietnam, Japan, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Ecuador and the RoK.
All players in the world’s top 12 have also registered to participate in the tournament, promising to bring billiards lovers around the world interesting encounters of high expertise and quality.
Apart from its key players such as Ly The Vinh, Tran Quyet Chien, Nguyen Quoc Nguyen, Ma Xuan Cuong, Ngo Dinh Nai and Duong Anh Vu, Vietnam is also sending 16 others from Ho Chi Minh City, two from Danang city and two from Binh Duong province to the event.
Tran Quyet Chien is currently Vietnam’s top cueist, ranking 17th in the world standings. Chien once claimed a bronze medal at the 2012 Asian Championships and made the quarterfinals of the 2013 Istanbul and Hurghada World Cup, 2014 Porto World Cup and the 2015 Asian Championships in Seoul early this year.
In recent years, Chien scored encouraging victories against many of the world’s top ten players, including Frederic Caudron of Belgium (world no. 5) at the 2015 Ho Chi Minh City World Cup, and Marco Zanetti of Italy (world no. 4) at the 2014 Luxor World Cup.
At last year’s World Cup competition in Guri, Nguyen Quoc Nguyen brought home a single bronze medal for Vietnam after losing 30-40 to Frederic Caudron of Belgium in the semi-finals.
