Vietnamese athletes to compete at Asian walking championships

VOV.VN - Talented local athletes Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc and Nguyen Thanh Ngung are set to compete at the 2023 Asian 20km Race Walking Championships, with the event scheduled to take place on March 19 in Nomi in Japan.

According to the plan, the Vietnamese competitors aim to secure a plan for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics as they can qualify via this year’s event.

Previously, “Walking Queen” Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc qualified for the 2012 London Olympics thanks to winning a bronze medal at the same event held in Japan back in 2012.

Furthermore, Phuc’s brother Nguyen Thanh Ngung also earned a place to enter 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics after a strong performance at the walking championships in 2016.

This year Phuc needs to clock a time of one hour 29 minutes and 20 seconds, while her brother needs a time of hour 20 minutes and 10 seconds in order to qualify for the Olympics.

Aside from Phuc and Ngung, two other Vietnamese athletes will compete in the event, including Vo Xuan Vinh and Nguyen Thi Van.
