Vietnam wins two silver medals at Asia Pickleball Games 2023
VOV.VN - Local athletes brought home two silver medals during their first participation at the Asia Pickleball Games 2023, with the sporting concluding in Taiwan (China) on October 9.
Nguyen Anh Thang bagged the nation’s first silver medal in the men's singles event in the group of competitors above 35-years-old.
The Vietnamese player caused a surprise when he defeated strong players from Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan (China). He came second in the competition after eventually losing out to Vishal Jadhav of Indonesia 2-1 in the final match.
Thang and his teammate Le Ba Thanh Xuan clinched another bronze medal in the men's doubles above 35-years-old.
Elsewhere, a bronze medal went to two Vietnamese players, including Truong Quang Vu and Tran Thi Kim Loi, in the mixed doubles event following their loss against Kai Fen Yi and Yao Cheng Wang, the strong duo from the host country.
The Asia Pickleball Games took place in Taichung city of Taiwan (China) from October 6 to October 9. This premier event served to bring together pickleball enthusiasts from across the continent, showcasing their skills, sportsmanship, and passion for the game.
The tournament featured a range of exciting categories, including men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and the thrilling team challenge. With a diverse range of competitions on offer, the tournament caters to players of all genders and skill levels.
Pickleball is a sport which uses a paddle and plastic ball with holes, with the strokes in pickleball and tennis being similar.
This marks the first time that the nation has competed in the Asia Pickleball Games.
Earlier, on September 21, Truong Quang Vu made history by earning the first gold medal for the country at the World Pickleball Championship 2023 which was held in Bali, Indonesia.
