Vietnam wins opener at AFF U16 Youth Championship
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese U16 men’s national football team trounced Singapore 5-1 on July 31 in their opening game of Group A at the AFF U16 Youth Championship in Indonesia.
The game got off to a flyer as Huu Trong opened the scoring for Vietnam just eight minutes in with a close-range finish.
Duc Thien then doubled the lead in the 23rd minute.
After going into a 2-0 lead, the Vietnamese footballers kept the pace slow amid hot weather conditions. However, their Singaporean rivals quickly took advantage of this to shorten the lead to 2-1 in injury time in the first half.
After conceding, Vietnam hit back immediately with Xuan Toan making it 3-1 just one minute later.
Going into the second half, the Vietnamese team went on to score two further goals to win the match with a thumping 5-1 score line.
Moving forward, Vietnam will play hosts Indonesia in their next match on August 6.
Vietnam are in Group A alongside Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines. Group B features Thailand, Timor Leste, Laos, and Brunei. Meanwhile, Malaysia are defending their title in Group C against Australia, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
The top team from each group and the best second-place team will advance to the last four, with the final scheduled for August 13.
