Vietnam tops Southeast Asia in ranking of travelling football fans
VOV.VN - Vietnamese football fans have topped a Southeast Asia ranking of supporters following their national teams abroad, according to Malaysia-based football platform ASEAN Football.
In a ranking published on October 15, ASEAN Football placed Vietnam first with estimated figure of 85%, followed by Thailand at 80%, Malaysia at 78%, Cambodia at 75%, Brunei at 72% and the Philippines at 45%.
The ranking assessed the extent to which fans travel abroad to support their national teams. However, ASEAN Football said the figures were AI-generated estimates based on social media posts by fan communities, rather than verified data on international travel or stadium attendance. It did not provide a detailed methodology explaining how the percentages were derived.
The platform also excluded nationals living or working abroad from its assessment. Nevertheless, without further information about the calculation method or the basis for comparison, the figures should be understood as estimates published by ASEAN Football rather than confirmed proportions of supporters who travelled overseas.
This is not the first time ASEAN Football has highlighted the strong support for Vietnam's national team.
During the ASEAN Cup 2026, it reported that Vietnam attracted an average attendance of 25,599 spectators per match, the highest among the 10 participating teams. Indonesia followed with 24,875, while Cambodia ranked third with 17,169.
