Vietnam to take on archrivals at 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers
VOV.VN - It would be a big challenge for Vietnam as coach Park Hang-seo’s men will clash against strong opponents such as China and Japan, at the third and final round of Asian qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
According to the official draw announced on July 1, Vietnam will play in Group B alongside Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, China, and Oman that are all strong teams in Asia.
Vietnam’s opponents are strong and the coaching board will make the best preparation for each game, said coach Park, adding that the upcoming round would be a real test for his players to hone in skills.
Vietnam’s first leg series will begin in September and their reverse fixtures will take place from November till February 2022.
Elsewhere, the draw saw Group A made up of Iran, the Republic of Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.
The 12 teams were split into two groups with Japan, the continent's leading team according to the FIFA World Rankings, drawn in Group B, while Iran, the second strongest team in Asia was put into Group A.
Group winners and runners-up will book their places to compete in the finals of the World Cup.
The two third-placed teams will then compete in a play-off round, with the winner progressing to face a representative from another continent to secure a place in the finals of the World Cup.
