Vietnam to play friendlies against Germany, Japan ahead of Women’s World Cup

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese national women’s football team have scheduled two friendly matches against the German and Japanese national women’s teams before the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup starts in July.

Information on the fixtures was released by Tran Quoc Tuan, president of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), at a press conference held on January 4 in Hanoi.

The Vietnamese team led by head coach Mai Duc Chung are due to hold a training course in Japan this April, with plans made to play a friendly against host country Japan’s national women’s team.

They will then fly to Cambodia to attend the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 32) which is scheduled to run from May 5 to May 17, with the Vietnamese team aiming to win their fourth consecutive gold medal in the regional tournament.

Once SEA Games 32 concludes they will then travel to Europe to undergo another training camp where they will hold friendlies against the German national women’s football team and a Germany football club.

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup is the ninth edition of the global tournament, the quadrennial world championship for women’s national football teams organised by FIFA.

The 2023 tournament will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, with this version of the competition marking the first time that the FIFA Women's World Cup will have two host nations and 32 teams competing for the trophy instead of 24 as was previously the case.

Most notably, this is the first time that Vietnam have progressed to the finals of the prestigious international tournament.

In Group E, Vietnam will take on defending champions the United States on July 22, the winner of an intercontinental play-off on July 27, and the Netherlands on August 1.
