Vietnam to host 2026 Southeast Asian Judo Championships
VOV.VN - Vietnam will host the 2026 Southeast Asian Judo Championships which is scheduled to take place in Bac Ninh province’s competition hall in May.
Nguyen Huu An, Head of the Judo Department under the Sports Authority of Vietnam and General Secretary of the Vietnam Judo Federation, shared that Vietnam has been given the right to host this year's Southeast Asian Championships.
The country has made plan for the organization and will ensure that the facilities meet professional standards throughout the tournament, he noted.
Judokas from 9 teams in Southeast Asia will vie for medals for both men and women. Vietnamese judo athletes will have the opportunity to compete with top fighters right on home soil.
In particular, they will compete in the 2026 Asian Judo Championships due to run in China in April, and then travel to Vietnam for Southeast Asian Judo Championships.
Last year, the Southeast Asian tournament was held in the Philippines, featuring events for junior and senior age groups. Vietnam took the lead in the overall rankings, winning 14 gold medals in the sparring events.
The 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 33) in 2025 was the most recent international competition for Vietnamese judo. Local athletes won 1 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze medals, and the national team did not win any gold medals in the sparring events at SEA Games 33.
